PIHP ADVOCACY

Policy Work at PIHP

At PIHP, our policy and advocacy work centers Pacific Islander voices in the decisions that impact our health, families, and futures. We track and respond to local and statewide policies, create culturally grounded educational resources, and host community conversations that break down complex issues into accessible, actionable information.

Through advocacy, partnerships, and civic engagement efforts, we work to ensure Pacific Islander communities are not only represented—but actively shaping the policies that affect us.

Perpetuation and Preservation Advocacy Learning Series

In partnership with the NHPI Data Policy Lab, PIHP hosts the Perpetuation and Preservation Advocacy Learning Series, a three-part leadership and skill-building program grounded in a Native Hawaiian perspective.

This virtual series equips participants with:

  • A cultural foundation for advocacy and civic engagement

  • Historical and issue-based understanding impacting NHPI communities

  • Practical tools for legislative, community-based, administrative, and digital advocacy

Through storytelling, dialogue, and hands-on skill building, participants learn how to turn lived experience into meaningful action.

YAP & SIP

Yap & Sip is a recurring community gathering hosted by PIHP that creates space for open civic dialogue, bold ideas, and shared perspectives on local politics. Designed as a relaxed and welcoming environment, this event invites community members to share their “hot takes,” listen to others, and engage in thoughtful conversation around the issues that impact our communities.

Immigration Preparedness Handbook

Navigating the U.S. immigration system can be overwhelming, especially in uncertain times. The Immigration Preparedness Handbook is designed to help individuals and families understand their rights, prepare for potential encounters with immigration enforcement, and make informed decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones. The goal of this handbook is to make information, resources, and updates accessible to our broader community.
This tool is designed to provide information, resources, and a guide to create a plan of action for those engaging in immigration processes or who are impacted by recent changes to immigration policies. This manual contains four different chapters: (1) Explaining the U.S. Immigration Process; (2) Know Your Rights; (3) Family Planning, and (4) Pacific Islander Immigration Status and Information. The first part explains the steps of the immigration process in the U.S. along with key definitions and pathways important to the immigration process. The second section focuses on your rights at home and in public spaces when interacting with immigration enforcement agents This section also includes information and resources on deportation processes and immigrant access to health care. Section three includes information, guides, and templates for family planning in case of emergency. Lastly, section four includes information about immigration related information specific to Pacific Islanders including the different immigration and citizenship statuses assigned to different islands, travel ban information, and healthcare access.
* The information in this manual is for educational purposes only. It does not, and is not intended to, constitute legal advice. In addition, the manual was developed for use within California, meaning–some of the information included does not apply to people elsewhere.*

Civic Budget Engagement

PIHP is a part of Abundant Community Transformations (ACT), a coalition of nonprofit organizations working to build intergenerational strength, collective care, and long-term movement infrastructure for working-class Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities in Orange County. ACT advances community-centered policy change, builds long-term advocacy infrastructure, and works to ensure our communities have real influence in county institutions and budget decisions.

Through ACT-led county budget engagement efforts, PIHP helps equip community members to understand:

  • How Orange County allocates public funding

  • Who shapes county budget decisions

  • How taxpayers can advocate for equitable investment

  • How NHPI voices can influence where resources go

These intention behind this is to demystify the county budget and position our community as informed, active participants in shaping public investment.
